Key from Segobriga
Lost-wax bronze reproduction of a Roman key found during the excavation of the Circus of Segobriga. 1st-2nd century AD. Currently housed in the Segobriga Museum (Saelices, Cuenca).
Among the different models of metal keys and their respective opening mechanisms (see Castrelos 12, 1999), the Segobriga key would be a palette (or square palette) in a Z shape, with an "elevation-sliding" opening system (see animation on Virtual Par).
"Security" systems were not a Roman invention; they have been known since the 5th century BC and were used to lock doors, chests, trunks, boxes, and locks.
